There are a range of other certification programs used worldwide and in Australia, which don't currently apply to any Tradewinds products. A couple of the more commonly seen certification programs are described here.
The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods. http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/
The focus of Rainforest Alliance, which was established in 1987, is on promoting healthy eco-systems and as part of that work they aim to transform communities, business practices and consumer behaviour. Their work in farming communities focuses on managing natural resources more effectively, so that farming families can increase their income without resorting to unsustainable farming practices and deforestation.
What Does Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Mean?
The Rainforest Alliance green frog seal is used on products which contain ingredients sourced from Rainforest Alliance certified farms or forests. This certification has its own criteria designed to “conserve wildlife; safeguard soils and waterways; protect workers, their families and local communities; and increase livelihoods in order to achieve true, long-term sustainability”. http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/about/marks/rainforest-alliance-certified-seal
The UTZ program started in 1999 focused on sustainability in the coffee industry, and later expanded to include tea and cocoa. UTZ has its own certification system focused on sustainable farming and better opportunities for farmers, their families and our planet. They focus on education around farming methods which enable better working conditions and the flow on effects to family and environment. They work with major multinational brands with a vision to increase the percentage of sustainable coffee, tea and cocoa in the world. They use a certification system which is monitored by independent third parties through the whole supply chain.
